Sen. Leach joins officials from the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission, HMSHost Corp., Bethesda, Md., and Sunoco Inc., Philadelphia, to cut a ceremonial ribbon officially opening the first totally redesigned Turnpike Service Plaza in the greater Philadelphia region.

KING OF PRUSSIA, May 13, 2010 - This week, Sen. Daylin Leach (D-Delaware/ Montgomery) attended a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the first newly designed Turnpike Service Plaza in the Philadelphia area. The King of Prussia plaza is located near the Norristown Exchange (Exit 333) on the westbound traffic side.

The redesigned plaza will be home to a larger, food court-style layout and Pennsylvania’s Welcome Center. The building, which was constructed according to Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building guidelines, features a variety of energy-saving measures, including unique “touch-free” restrooms that focus on water conservation and cleanliness. The plaza also features a light-colored main roof which will cut energy use by reflecting heat.

“I am happy to announce the opening of the improved Turnpike plaza right here in King of Prussia,” Leach said. “I am especially pleased that developers funded the redesign without using public money and by adhering to energy efficiency standards. I hope that others will follow the example set by the Turnpike Commission in the construction of this site when starting subsequent projects here in Pennsylvania.”

The King of Prussia Plaza is the sixth plaza to be constructed on the Turnpike without investment of toll dollars or other public funding since the Turnpike Commission began its redevelopment in 2005. More information about the $7.3 million plaza can be found by visiting www.paturnpike.com.
