KING OF PRUSSIA, FEB. 24, 2010 - State Sen. Daylin Leach (D-Delaware/Montgomery) today announced that children and adults living with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and their families can now take advantage of available mini-grants offered by the state.

Autism is a neurobiological disorder that affects a person’s ability to communicate and relate to others.

“More than 20,000 Pennsylvanians live with autism, many of whom may need assistance but aren’t sure where to look for it,” Leach said. “I hope that many will be able to apply for and receive these mini-grants so that they may find the support they need.”

The mini-grants, available through the Department of Public Welfare Bureau of Autism Services, can be used for respite or child care, summer camp programs and special events at educational venues, autism or advocacy related conferences, workshops or training opportunities, community programs or safety modifications or adaptations for home or community.

In order to qualify, applicants must be a Pennsylvania resident who has autism spectrum disorder (or a Pennsylvanian who has a family member with ASD) and does not currently receive family support services.

Applications must be postmarked by April 16. For more information and an application, visit www.autisminpa.org and click on “2010 Mini Grant Information” or call the Department of Public Welfare Bureau of Autism Services at 1-888-359-7689.
