HARRISBURG, November 20, 2009 – State Sen. Daylin Leach (D-Delaware/Montgomery) today welcomed Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell's commitment to reforming state government.
At a press conference held yesterday in Harrisburg, Gov. Rendell vowed to spend his final year in office improving what he called Pennsylvania’s “broken” system.
Specifically, Rendell pledged to reform campaign-finance laws, selection of appellate judges and the legislative redistricting process in Pennsylvania.
Leach said he is pleased that the governor is taking a stand on the issue of reform.
“Our Commonwealth is home to hard-working and loyal public servants, but they can only work successfully in a healthy political system,” Leach said. “I look forward to the work ahead, and will be proud to stand with Gov. Rendell throughout the process."
This session, Leach introduced Senate Bill 403, which would change the practice of legislative redistricting by reducing the opportunity for gerrymandering. Leach noted that by reforming how legislative districts are drawn, SB 403 would ultimately increase the possibility of again having competitive elections in our Commonwealth.
That bill is currently under consideration by the Senate State Government committee.
