KING OF PRUSSIA, JULY 22, 2009 — State Sen. Daylin Leach, D-Delaware/Montgomery, today announced significant state funding to increase water quality and improve environmental education at Villanova University.

Villanova University’s Down Spout Disconnection Program will receive a $134,750 low-interest loan to disconnect approximately 40,000 square feet of impervious surface, removing 85,000 cubic feet of runoff from the headwaters of the Darby Watershed yearly. Currently, surface draining from downspouts over impervious surfaces into the watershed is causing pollutants, flooding and stream channel erosion.

“This funding will not only help prevent pollutants from getting into our waterways, but it will also set an example for future environmental education programs at Villanova,” Leach said. “The project will benefit our community for years to come, so I’m pleased that it will receive state support.”

The loan was approved by the board of the Pennsylvania Infrastructure Investment Authority (PENNVEST).
